How To Become
A
Texas Concealed Handgun Instructor
To become a Qualified Texas Concealed Handgun Instructor you must take
the Texas Department of Public Safety training course and successfully
complete a background check.
Classes are held at the Department of Public Safety training facility in Austin.
New instructor classes are scheduled four times a year; limited 50 - 100
students per class.
Renewal instructor classes are scheduled August through December of every odd
numbered year and limited to 50 instructors per class; there are new procedures for
this now.
The new instructor training course is a 36 hour course covering the complete Texas
Concealed Handgun Training Course.
It includes the shooting practical; an instructor candidate is required to take the
range portion with both a revolver and a semi-auto, use a minimum caliber of 9mm
and pass each with a score of 90%.
You must also pass a multiple choice and true-false examination over the
course material.
Instructors who can document firearm instructor certification through the
NRA, TCLEOSE, or from active military service, may qualify for an abbreviated
28-hour course; active military can bypass the range portion.
